Guandu Riverside Park

Riverside Parks in Taipei

Located between Guandu Temple and Lane 601, Section 4, of Zhongyang North Road, the Guandu Riverside Park occupies an area of about 50,900m2.

In this spacious park, there are footpaths and bikeways. In addition, the Guandu Wharf is one of the boarding points of the "Blue Highway" for four routes: Dadaocheng Wharf, Tamsui Old Street, Bali Left Bank, and Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf. From the Guandu Riverside Bikeway, you can also ride to the Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf in the north and Shezidao down the Keelung River in the south. The view formed by these three points is splendid. Here, there is rich intertidal ecology for observation and research. In the afternoon, dusk, and night, the appearance and scenery vary, especially the riverside view along the Tamsui River; the sunset scene of the Guanyin Mountain in Bali, and the dazzling landscape lights on the pier in the night.

Knowledge Tips

Guandu in History
The geonym comes from the Spanish word "Casidor." After the Japanese removed the "s," it became the present-day sound "Guandu." Guandu was once a sulfur mine and export center in ancient times. In 1895, it was a military facility with fortresses. It was also struck by meteorites. The suspected meteorite remains are still left on the Zhiqiang Campus of Guandu Elementary School.

Wetlands
Wetlands are also called marshes. Some refer them to as the "kidneys of the earth," because they can purify and filter contaminants, refill groundwater, and protect the coastline. Surveys show that wetlands have high biodiversity, making them extremely valuable in terms of both the environment and ecology.

Nearby Attractions

Guandu Bridge
Spanning above the Tamsui River like a rainbow, it is the bridge that links New Taipei City and Taipei City. From the leisure kiosks in Guandu and Shezidao, you can see its beautiful shadows. It is also one of the favorite shooting spots for photography lovers.

Guandu Temple
With a history of over 300 years, the magnificent Guandu Temple was first built in the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty, and it has been refurbished many times before taking its present look. Currently, together with the Mazu Temple in Beigang, the Mazu Temple in Lugang, they make up the three major Mazu temples in Taiwan. On the entrance corridor in the ancient Buddha cave in the temple, there is a gold ingot on the stone mortar, the "Treasure of the Cave," for believers to touch for blessing. Outside the temple is a belt-shaped square crowded with visitors. Under the tree shales, there are tables and benches, stylish kiosks, and wild doves foraging in packs. Here, you can look over the Guanyin Mountain and the Guandu Bridge spanning over the Tamsui River like a rainbow. During Lunar New Year, Lantern Festival, and Mazu's birthday on the 28th of the third lunar month, there are people everywhere in the vicinity. They all are important events to locals.

Guandu Nature Park
Major park commentaries and related facilities are around the nature center. In the park, there is a bird-watching area equipped with high-power telescopes, multimedia appreciation, related materials, and specimen commentary. Bird-watching huts around are supported by docents in ordinary times, and regular guided tours and station commentary services are arranged on holidays. It is a great rest stop for family cyclists.
