Yanping Riverside Park

Riverside Parks in Taipei

Located between the Zhongxiao Bridge and Zhongzhou Pumping Station at Section 9, Yanping North Road, Yanping Riverside Park occupies an area of about 94,350m2.

Entering the park from Nanjing West Road, a thick forest, a green meadow, and towering trees are the first things in sight. It has been the backyard garden of residents of Datong District.  "Yanping Temple" in the park is a meeting place of local seniors. On the tablet the date December 1905 is inscribed. Under the main altar in the temple square, the style of Huye is simplistic and spiritual, witnessing the rises and declines of the district. Dadaocheng Wharf is located outside the floodgate at the end of Minsheng West Road. Walking through the floodgate, a junk in sharp colors and an arch bridge in a graceful shape are in sight.

At the Dadaocheng Wharf (floodgate 5), a blue highway pier, café square, and a junk are planned. Cycling northward along the river, you can enjoy the scenery of the Yangming Mountain and sunset of Tamsui River. In contrast with the busy traffic on a number of cross-river bridges, the leisure on hand is exceptionally valuable. Cyclists can also visit cultural and historical monuments nearby, including Dadaocheng, Dihua Street, Xiahai City God Temple, Taipei Confucius Temple, Dalongdong Baoan Temple, and Yongle Market. Then, you will understand the former glory of Dadaocheng.

Knowledge Tips

Dadaocheng
As what the geonym in Chinese suggests, it was a grain sun-drying site.  Dadaocheng rose from a territorial competition between merchants. After the "Dingxiajia Conflict" in Bangka, previous settlers of Dingxiajia (immigrants from Tongan in Fujian) were defeated and forced out of Dadaocheng. The advantage of local watercourse transportation helped Dadaocheng thrive to replace Bangka later. From Taipei's historical point of view, Dadaocheng eventually replaced Banga in "Fucheng, Lugang and Bangka," the three earliest harbor cities in Taiwan to become the most flourishing district in Taipei and one of Taipei's three blocks.

Nearby Attractions

Dihua Street
The earliest shop in Dihua Street appeared in 1851 during the Qing dynasty. When Quanzhou and Tongan immigrants in Bangka began to massively open shops in Dihua Street two years later, "Zhong Street" was formed. During Japanese colonization, most shops in Dihua Street were grocers and tea shops. Later, rice shops, fabric shops, and medicinal herb shops began to gain importance in the block. Following the changes of times, local street views and building appearances also changed significantly from the simple Minnan-styled shops with sophisticated, gorgeous Baroque decorations into the present-day look.

After Taiwan's restoration (WWII), Dihua Street continued to be the distribution hub of groceries, medicinal herbs, and fabrics. Today, it is still the wholesale center of these three industries and the best-preserved and most historic old street in Taipei.  Besides the earliest block in Dadaocheng, Dihua Street is also the center of the Dadaocheng shopping area from the Qing dynasty until today. The antiquated style and busy business activities have been maintained in the street.

Xiahai City God Temple
By blessing Tongan people traveling from Fujian and settling in Taiwan, Xiahai City God has become the common belief of Tongan immigrants. After relocating from Bangka to Dadaocheng after the "Dingxiajao Conflict," Tongan immigrants built the temple to worship Xiahai City God as the number of worshippers increased. In fact, the whole Dadaocheng settlement was progressively formed due to the Xiahai City God Temple. Xiahai City God Temple was built in 1856 and took its present form in 1998 after renovation many times. In recent years, the God of Marriage (Yuexia Old Man) has been the deity that makes the temple famous and attracts many young visitors to worship him at the temple.
