A New Chapter in the Taipei Embankment Story: Exploring Nangang’s Past, Present, and Future
The latest addition to the Taipei Embankment Story series has landed on Songhe Street! While it continues the visual style established along the Songhe Street embankment, what sets this installation apart is the creative hand of lighting designer Jack Wu . Using light and shadow as his medium, Wu vividly brings out the diverse character of Nangang. On the same stretch, another mural by designer Jamie Wu , titled Time Machine Stroll, offers a glimpse into the golden days of Nangang’s past. Nangang, a district known for its fusion of transportation hubs and high-tech business districts, boasts a dynamic and multifaceted identity. Drawing inspiration from this, Jack Wu themed his mural Symbiotic Realms, City of Innovation, skillfully weaving the district’s development pulse and future aspirations into the artwork. The green ecological motifs spelling out “Nangang” inject a vibrant sense of life into the wall, turning it into a new local landmark. The mural is filled with a rich array of characters, each representing Nangang’s diversity and inclusivity. According to the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO), one of the highlights of this beautification effort lies in the clever use of retaining wall angles to outline various faces—creating a sense of layered depth and visual surprise. The result is a compelling and highly photogenic public art destination. Further along the Songhe Street embankment, don’t miss Time Machine Stroll by Jamie Wu. Inspired by Nangang’s industrial and cultural evolution, the piece employs geometric color blocks to depict the rise of industry and modernization, while also incorporating historical icons like the Bagua Kiln(Hoffmann kiln) and Yucheng Theater, vividly portraying the district’s past prosperity. In contrast, the adjacent City of Innovation section reflects Nangang’s current identity as a tech and commercial hub, offering a vision of the district’s future. Together, the murals—along with the portrait illustrations spanning the retaining wall—enhance both the interactivity and visual depth of the entire installation. This stretch of mural on Songhe Street serves as a vivid canvas of Nangang’s cultural and historical identity, as well as a symbol of its vitality and innovation. Located at No. 372, Songhe Street, this imaginative and historically rich embankment artwork invites every citizen to pause, explore, and experience the unique charm of Nangang as it blossoms through art.
